Playing Doctor

A great way to help your child feel more comfortable going to the doctor is to re-create a normal visit to the doctor at home. A play doctor kit should provide you with all the tools you need. Take turns being the doctor and then the patient, and let your child’s dolls or action figures be the patients as well. Play is a healthy way for children to work through their anxieties. This is also a great way to teach young children to identify body parts.

Reading children’s books about going to the doctor or being a doctor is a great way to teach children about the experience. Often children who read books about the doctor’s office come into appointments proud that they are able to identify tools or that they know why the doctor is doing certain things, like listening to their hearts. This sense of mastery can make the whole experience more pleasant.
